    Ningaloo Eclipse preparations take the next step

    With one of the rarest Solar eclipses only 218 days away the Shire of Exmouth releases more information on additional accommodation options.

    Next April, Exmouth visitors and residents will have front-row seats for one of nature’s most phenomenal occurrences – a total solar eclipse – experiencing 62 seconds of totality as the Moon completely blocks the sun. On April 20, 2023 at around 11:27 AM, the path of totality will graze the tip of Western Australia in a 40-kilometre wide track near Exmouth, making it the most accessible land-based place on Earth to view the spectacle.

    Preparations are well underway in Exmouth, and its surroundings as communities anticipate welcoming up to 25,000 stargazers to the region. The WA State Government, led by JTSI, has set up a dedicated team to undertake comprehensive planning across multiple agencies to ensure the region has adequate support while ensuring guests have a safe and enjoyable experience.

    The State Government, working with the Shire of Exmouth, is adding additional camping capacity in Exmouth to accommodate the demand for viewing the Eclipse.

    Accommodation in Exmouth is heavily booked, so neighbouring towns along the Coral Coast Highway, such as Carnarvon and Onslow, will play a major role in accommodating visitors wishing to travel to see the Ningaloo Eclipse.

    Council approved at the Ordinary Council Meeting on August 25, 2022, the resolution 04-0822, which enables the Shire of Exmouth to finalise the planning around the Ningaloo Eclipse Event and to publish the fees & charges for the temporary Welch St Campsite. 

    Council is highly aware of the current demand for accommodation and workers' accommodation so that we can service the tourists that are coming through have also been put under pressure, but it's key to know that we're actively speaking with the ministers to try and get this resolved - independently from the temporary campsite for the Ningaloo Eclipse.

    Online Bookings for the Welch St campsite will be available on the Shire of Exmouth website directly, and a release date will be announced shortly. 
    The Shire of Exmouth also urges residents and landowners to register their property as temporary accommodation for the Ningaloo Eclipse in 2023 if they are expecting visitors or plan to rent out accommodation. To make this as easy as possible, Local Planning Policy 6.27 and an easy-to-tick guide as well as pre-filled templates to prepare local properties were introduced in July 2022.

    We urge our community to register their property and reach out to the Shire offices if they have questions about the process. Local Planning Policy 6.27 was implemented to enable our landowners to become part of a sustainable accommodation solution for the Ningaloo Eclipse and to give us an idea about the actual carrying capacity of our town for this once-in-a-lifetime event.
